Brentwood’s Catholic Youth Service (BCYS) has produced an accessible and relevant resource for young people ahead of the canonisation of Blessed John Henry Newman on 13 October. Says Fr Dominic Howarth, who leads on formation in the Diocese of Brentwood: “Newman is the first English Saint for decades! But how to illuminate his life for young people? I have been puzzling about how to make him accessible for them, as his is a rather intellectual and ecclesial journey.”
In collaboration with diocesan archivist Fr Stewart Foster, Fr Paul Keane and Brenden Thompson, CEO of Catholic Voices, Fr Dominic has devised a leaflet to do just that. “It was first used at this month’s diocesan Youth Mass, which celebrated Newman’s life and inspiration. I have tried to highlight some aspects of Newman’s life and journey that are “relatable” and although it is worded in ways aimed for those in their mid to late teens, it is hopefully also a useful resource for older people too.”

Would you like to know more? There are lots of resources at www.newmancanonisation.com. These include many quotes from Newman’s writings, and some short videos about different aspects of his life – including one filmed in Oxford with long-time friend of the BCYS, Brenden Thompson.
The monthly Youth Mass takes place at Brentwood Cathedral on the first Wednesday of the month at 8pm. It is followed by refreshments in the Cathedral Conference rooms and is a great chance to meet other young Catholics from around the diocese or catch up with those you’ve met at previous events! Everyone is welcome.
