CAFOD is encouraging parishioners from across the diocese to join thousands of others on 26 June in a mass meeting outside Parliament, where hundreds of MPs are expected to meet with their constituents as they call for urgent climate action. ‘The Time is Now’ is a mass lobby of politicians organised by the Climate Coalition, of which CAFOD is a member, to tell our leaders that enough is enough. As part of the ‘Our Common Home’ campaign, CAFOD is calling on the government to reduce carbon emissions to ‘net zero’ by 2045 which will mean that Britain no longer contributes to climate change.
CAFOD’s local representative in Brentwood, Chris Driscoll said: “Climate change affects our health, our homes and our beautiful landscapes. It disproportionately affects the world’s poorest communities and is not the legacy we want to leave our grandchildren. Catholics around England and Wales are taking action in their local parishes and schools, standing shoulder to shoulder with our sisters and brothers around the world.”
The mass lobby is part of a series of other interfaith events and activities including workshops, a walk of witness, a talk led by the former Archbishop of Canterbury and other faith leaders. For more information and to register for the mass lobby, go to CAFOD’s web site https://cafod.org.uk/Campaign/Climate/Climate-lobby CAFOD and the Climate Coalition has produced a handy guide to the mass lobby with lots of information to help people make preparations.
If you are planning to attend and would like to meet CAFOD staff and other campaigners from across the diocese on the day, Chris Driscoll would be happy to hear from you. Call Chris on 07776 493162 or email [email protected] and he will let you know where to meet.
