It’s not just about giving up sweets or Facebook, which is about me. The real message of Lent is ‘can I draw closer to Christ during these 40 days in a kind of spiritual wilderness?’
A series of Passion paintings by Andrew White will be on show at Brentwood Cathedral during Lent, which began on Ash Wednesday this week.
Andrew White was born in Louth, Lincolnshire in 1968. He spent two years studying at Lincoln College of Art and Design from where he won a place at the Slade School of Art in 1986. Here he won first prize for best traditional painting.
The Passion paintings are artistic meditations on Christ’s redemptive suffering. The beauty of the paintings and the intensity of feeling behind each image reveals how the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ are salvific mysteries that the whole of humanity is caught up in.
Andrew Merchant of BBC Essex has recorded a reflection on each painting by Fr Martin Boland, Dean of the Cathedral, with a biblical passage for each one, read by a parishioner of the cathedral, Barbara Wojewodka. The reflections will be broadcast on the Sundays of Lent at 0640 and 0740 in the BBC Essex Sunday Breakfast Faith programme.
