Brentwood Cathedral is hosting free lunchtime recitals on successive days during half-term.
Julia Wilson-James, a soprano who is also part of the Cathedral Choir, will sing Sacred Classics on Wednesday 1st June from 1pm – 1.45pm. She will be accompanied by pianist Tim Smith.
And at the same time on Thursday 2nd June Christopher Mazen, a Gospel singer and pianist from Louisiana, USA, will present a varied programme of ‘Gospel Music’. This recital will take place in the Song School close to the Cathedral.
Refreshments will be available after the recital. Admission is free, but donations toward expenses are welcomed. (If you are a UK tax payer please consider using Gift Aid to increase the value of your donation by a quarter.)
The Cathedral hosts a popular series of lunchtime concerts; the programme is varied including regular organ recitals, especially by students from the Royal College of Music, London.
In addition, it welcomes performances from soloists and ensembles, both instrumental and vocal.
In March, for example, Giacomo Banella, a Masters graduate of the Guildhall School of Music, presented an excellent recital on the double bass, with piano accompaniment by David Silkoff, while RCM student Domenico Gioffre enchanted listeners with his performance at the organ. Audiences have also been entertained recently by Michael Horner and Peter Corrigan on jazz piano and double bass respectively, Jeffery Wilson and the group Saxology, and virtuoso pianist Reiko Fujisawa.
Director of Music Andrew Wright says: “The recitals are a wonderful opportunity to listen to beautiful music in splendid surroundings and also to enjoy refreshments afterwards in the Song School.”
